Session 1: ABCs of AAC
Overview of AAC no-tech/low tech to high tech. Factors to consider when introducing AAC systems and strategies. Debunking common AAC myths.
Session 2: SGDs vs. iPads with Communication Apps: A Comparison
Side by side comparison of most commonly used SGDs and apps. Pros/Cons of SGD vs. Communication apps. (Most common apps include LAMP: WFL, Proloquo2go, TouchChat HD, Compass; SGDs include: PRC Accents, Saltillo NovaChat, TobiiDynaVox)
Session 3: Introduction to Programming of Common apps
A basic introduction to programming of the most commonly used apps . Would include choosing user area, creating a user area, programming buttons, developing a language map for programming.
Session 4: Access to Communication Systems
How to determine access method for each communicator (brief overview of alternative access methods to develop overall understanding to ID potential students in need for higher level AAC intervention). What factors to consider in choosing a user area for a student including number of buttons, size of buttons/screen, visual/motor skills, and ability to isolate a point. When/how to refer to OT for assistance.
Session 5: Aided Language Stimulation
Modeling the use of a language system to increase functional understanding and use. Latest research behind this method and tips and tricks to incorporate into ADLs.
Session 6: AAC Success in the Classroom
Learning to be a successful communication partner and model for students using AAC .Providing scaffold support for the classroom team (teachers, para educators, OT, PT, AAC specialist, PARENTS). Tips for creating a supportive classroom environment to encourage students to become successful, independent communicators.
Session 8: Low Tech Options/Backups
Step by step development of low tech communication systems. Touch upon PODD systems, PAS (Partner Assisted Scanning), Flip n’Talk communication books and others. Importance of having a low tech back up for SGDs/Communication apps.
Session 9: Partner Assisted Scanning (PAS)
Overview of PAS and different methods of implementation. Discussion of who this type of communication method may be appropriate for and why it may be a good fit for functional communication. Detailed step by step training on how to teach this method to the individual communicator and those supporting the communicator. Can be used for communication, choices, receptive language learning, preparing for high tech communication for indivisuals with access difficulties.
Session 10: Evaluation and Funding for SGDs: The Basics
Targeted for SLPs: INTRODUCTION to methods and process of trialing speech generating devices/communication apps and how to begin the funding process. Includes different options to explore for funding and points required for submitting a funding request to insurance.
